Below is a list of items added to the site:

July 21, 2001

  • The bulletin board section is updated with reports on the golden anniversary reunion of the class of 1951 and the Des Moines Township Schools all-class reunion. There are also other interesting reflections on the DMT experience.

July 20, 2001

  • We're developing a page about the Des Moines Township Schools as a follow-up to its all-class reunion held last weekend. The first installment was the panoramic photo at the top of this page. The next installment is an edited audio interview with Karen Truelson Kerns who graduated from DMT in 1957 and was co-chair of the 2001 all-class reunion. But we need to take a break before we finish the project. So check out the interviews and check back soon for a bit more, including a photo of Karen as a curly-headed elementary school girl just as stunning in appearance as Shirley Temple. We also hope to have a story and photos from the RHS class of 1951 reunion which was also held last weekend.

July 16, 2001

  • Word has been received of the death of Jim Young (RHS class of 1957) who died in recent days. We hope to get more information about him to put on the memorial board.

July 15, 2001

  • Coming soon — a report on the Des Moines Township all-class reunion held July 14. Also, a column by Deane Gunderson with the story of how DMT consolidated in 1916 by transporting their one-room schools to a central site. And audio reflections by Karen Kerns who was one of the co-chairs of the DMT reunion. The above photo of the DMT schools was taken circa 1916 by N.A. Nelson (otherwise known as the "bee man" around the Rolfe area). The photo is from Karen's collection.

  • Word has been received that John Prehn (RHS class of 1955) died on Saturday, July 14th. We hope to have more information about his life — perhaps an obituary or reflection to put in the memorial section.

July 7, 2001

  • Information is posted about Greater Rolfe Days to be held July 13-15.

  • We've revamped the section of Deane Gunderson's columns from the 1970s entitled Bubbles in the Wine and have posted a third column from that series. The new piece is about the buzz of activity of Rolfe's Main Street in the 1920s and 30s.

  • The section of Rolfe news stories from the Pocahontas Record-Democrat is updated.

  • Obituaries for Anna Applegate, Olive Carlton, and Frieda Thorson are posted in the memorial section.

  • There will be graveside services for Bob Shelgren (RHS class of 1938) on July 15.

June 24, 2001

  • For those of you who have posted names to the web site alumni or faculty directories and need to make corrections or other changes, simply post a second entry and e-mail us with instructions to delete the first one. We may be able to do the job immediately, or it may take us a few days to get around to the task, so be patient.

June 22, 2001

  • We've begun posting some of the columns that Deane Gunderson (RHS 1935) wrote for The Rolfe Arrow between 1975 and 1977, titled "Bubbles in the Wine."

  • We've heard news of the recent deaths of Anna Applegate, Frieda Thorson, and Olive Carlton and will post available obituaries soon.

June 20, 2001

  • Greater Rolfe Days will be July 13, 14, and 15th. We'll try to get more info and post it. For photos from last year's parade, go to the Y2K photo gallery and scroll down the page.

  • Our recent technical difficulties with the forum page, chat room, and alumni directories have been resolved. That doesn't guarantee there won't be future problems, especially with the chat room if our NBCi service provider is down again. We encourage you to give these sections of the web site a try.

June 17, 2001

  • There were technical difficulties with the chat room last night (Saturday, June 16) and neither Jerry Farlow nor Helen Gunderson (the co-hosts) nor several other people could get in. The problem seemed to be with NBCi who provides the chat room service free of charge. We have written them an e-mail and hope to find out a way to make the set up more reliable.

  • There are technical difficulties with the forum page. We thought that it had not been used for the past several months because people weren't interested in it, but a couple contacted us today to say they had not been able to post a message via the forum page. Soooooo ... technology is great in many ways and allows many new things to be possible, but technology can also be very frustrating. We will see if there is a way to fix the forum page. Hopefully the job won't be too hard, but if it is, we might drop the section since it has had very little traffic.

June 16, 2001

  • The Rolfe news section has been updated.

  • The names and obituaries of Beryl B. Erickson, Laura Christensen McGuffin, William Blevins Nelson, Marie Ryen, Edward G. Schonberger, Hazel Christensen Thomsen, and Clifford Orville "Kip" Wilson are added to the memorial board.

May 22, 2001

  • The bulletin board page has been updated slightly with links to talks and a few photos from the May 20 graduation exercises at the Pocahontas Area Community School. Soon, the memorial section and Rolfe news sections will also be updated. We apologize for the delay over the past several weeks.

April 12, 2001

April 9, 2001

April 7, 2001

  • We've finally updated the section of articles about Rolfe published in the Pocahontas Record-Democrat. Will be updating the memorial page within a few days.

  • Last month we set a record for the number of unique visitors to our Rolfe Alumni web site.

  • Helen Gunderson, the RHS web site editor, announces a web site for her small business that includes a notecard gallery of rural Iowa scenes and other images. She vows not to use the RHS pulpit too often to make commercial announcements, but feels there should be some perks for her volunteer work on this site.

March 31, 2001

  • The bulletin board page is updated with the themes of "Proms" or "Spring Time Sports."

  •  Also, we know we haven't updated the memorial page or the Rolfe news section, but please be patient. It's not because we are lazy or don't care. In fact, we do care a lot. The issue has more to do with computer gremlins and strategies.

March 9, 2001

  • JoAnn Hauck Bollard's name is added to the list of those persons who have given funds to support this web site. She is a 1948 RHS alumna.

March 8, 2001

  • We know we haven't updated the web site lately, but the editor has been upgrading her computer and wrestling with gremlins in the process. We did modify the bulletin board page and have posted a theme for March. It's "Basketball, Sports, Games, Play, and the Imagination." What else during the month of basketball madness.

February 24, 2001

  • We're trying an experiment to put video on the web site. Click here to go to a clip from May of 1990 of the last graduation exercises held at Rolfe High School.

  • We'll be updating the web site soon with new articles from the Pocahontas Record-Democrat and other minor changes or additions such as a couple of obituaries. If you have material appropriate to add to the web site, please send it soon. If you have questions or suggestions, please send an e-mail message to the editor.

February 15, 2001

  • Randy Howard's name (class of 1966) added to list of recent deaths. A more thorough update of the memorial section will be done within a few weeks.

February 14, 2001

Happy Valentine's Day. Meet us at the RHS chat room at
9 pm Iowa time on Wednesday, February 14.

January 31, 2001

January 11, 2001

  • Obituary for Lyle Foster. Also a poem about D.M.T. and a reflection on growing up by Lyle who was an educator at D.M.T., Rolfe, and several other area schools for 39 years. There will be a memorial service for him June 16, 2001 in Pocahontas. See his obituary for further information.
