Rolfe High School alumni web site editor, Helen Gunderson, has revised the Retrospectively Rolfe calendar of black and white photographs that she first published in 2004. At the time, she produced only a limited, experimental batch with the intent of working out the bugs and having the next release of calendars ready for the all-class reunion this summer. The new version will be a 29-month calendar from August 2005 through December 2007 with images representing a century of life in the Rolfe community. Helen is arranging for an initial run of 50 copies to be available on Greater Rolfe Days weekend. |

Visitors can also order the calendar via this site; however, they will have to do so via the U.S. Postal Service since we are not yet set up with PayPal or other on-line payment services. preview pricing order form Over the last three decades, Helen has photographed Rolfe scenes and borrowed photographs of the town. In the late 1990s, she scanned most of those images and put the files on a computer disk. The originals, including slides taken by Ralph Mortensen, superintendent of the Rolfe schools in the 1950s, are housed at the Iowa State University Special Collections Department. In 1999, Helen wondered how she might make her collection of Rolfe images more accessible to the public. She then contacted Randy Martin, a 1975 graduate of Rolfe High School. He had worked with her on prior, Rolfe-related, audio-visual projects.. When Helen called Randy, he had started a web site hosting business and was willing to develop this site for the Rolfe alumni and post a gallery of Rolfe photos. Eventually Randy trained Helen to maintain the site. The Retrospectively Rolfe calendar measures 8 1/2 x 11 inches and is printed on high-quality, white cover stock. The calendar also includes a chipboard for firmness and is spiral bound. It includes a list of Rolfe businesses and service providers and an article describing Rolfe. For the most part, all the images are from scans of original photographs, negatives, or slides and do not include copies of photographs from annuals. Even if Helen had wanted or needed to use images from annuals to complete the calendar, it is very difficult to obtain good quality when reproducing material from printed publications. |
