ALICE M. SPENCER

Rolfe — Alice May Spencer, age 92, of Rolfe, passed away on Oct. 19 at the West Bend Care Center. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2008 at the Powers Funeral Home in Rolfe with Rev. Dwight Grosvenor officiating. Burial was held at Clinton-Garfield Cemetery near Rolfe. Powers Funeral Home in Rolfe was in charge of the arrangements.

Alice May Marine was born on May 2, 1916, the eldest daughter of George and Gletha (Myers) Marine in Paton. Alice was raised for the most part in Paton but moved to Rolfe and graduated from DMT in 1935. She was united in marriage to Howard Rollin Spencer on March 25, 1936. They were the parents of one daughter, Joyce Elaine (Spencer) Guess.

Alice was a homemaker for several years and assisted Howard on the farm. After moving into town in 1948, she became a telephone operator in Rolfe. In 1955, Alice attended Cosmetology School in Des Moines. After graduating, she owned and operated Alice's Beauty Salon in Pocahontas for thirty years, retiring in 1988.

Alice was a wonderful cook and an accomplished piano player. She was a member of the Rolfe United Methodist Church and was active in the Women's Groups.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Elaine Guess of Kansas City, Mo.; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Ricky) Inman of Rolfe, Tamara (Phillip) Kaiser of Phoenix, Ariz., Paula (Steve) Adkins of Kansas City, Mo., and Gregory Guess of Miami, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon (Virginia) Marine of Algona and George (Betty) Marine Jr. of Rolfe; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; her son-in-law, Lester Guess; one granddaughter, Peggy Lynne Guess; one sister, Mary Lou Gill; three brothers, Verle Myers, Kenneth Marine, and Edsel Marine.
