obituary from newspaper MARIE RYEN Rolfe — Marie Ryen, age 97, died on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Rolfe Care Center, Rolfe. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rolfe with the Rev. David Peterson officiating. Burial was in Clinton-Garfield Cemetery at Rolfe. Marie is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Louise, Evelyn, Olive, and Verna and brothers, Nels, Obert, Elmer and Elwood, and longtime and close friend, Leona Hamilton. Marie Ryen was born on April 5, 1904, on the family farm near Rolfe. She was the daughter of Ole G. and Emelia (Nelson) Ryen. Marie was educated in area country schools, graduating from D.M.T. High School. She and her brothers and sisters were a very close knit family and they all helped with the family farming operation for many years. Marie received her nurses training at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and returned to Rolfe, where she worked with Dr. Fuller White for many years. She also worked as a private nurse and a midwife and assisted with many births throughout the Rolfe area. Marie was an accomplished seamstress and an avid quilter and through the years made many items for family and friends. Marie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active in the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America, participating in various Bible studies, church circles and various church activities.
