MAUREEN PEDERSEN POCAHONTAS — Maureen “Sam” Pedersen, age 74, of Pocahontas, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, with the Rev. Dwight Grosvenor officiating. Burial is in Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 1, 2008, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas. Maureen Hazel Huston was born Sept. 28, 1933, at Fonda, Iowa. She was the daughter of Hugh and Hazel (Bradford) Huston. She graduated from OLGC High School in Fonda in 1951. She earned her teachers certificate from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She taught grade school in Rock Rapids and Rolfe. In 1956, Sam moved to Pocahontas where she taught 2nd grade. On May 29, 1964, Sam married Lowell Pedersen in Pocahontas. The couple settled in Pocahontas, where Sam continued to teach until retiring in 1995. She enjoyed reading and was an avid bowler and sports fan. Survivors include her husband, Lowell Pedersen of Pocahontas; daughters, Lori Pedersen (Doug Johnson) of Denver, CO, and Jean (Brent) Rankin of Littleton, CO; two grandchildren, Sam and Casey Rankin; and a sister, Pat (Paul) Enockson of Las Vegas, NV. Sam was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Jack and Paul Huston, and sisters, Delores Hay and Rosalyn Degenhardt.
