MARGARET FRERK

Pocahontas - Margaret "Peg" Frerk, age 81, of rural Pocahontas, died on August 16, 2003 at the Pocahontas Community Hospital.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Rolfe with the Rev. Merle Kollasch officiating. Burial was in St. Margaret's Cemetery at Rolfe.

Margaret Ann McCartan was born on August 30, 1921, near Pocahontas. She was the daughter of Theo and Rozella (Ellis) McCartan. Peg graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Pocahontas in 1939. During high school, she worked at O'Brien Drug and after school, she worked at the Pocahontas County Courthouse. On July 17, 1944, Peg married Harold Frerk at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pocahontas. The couple farmed near Pocahontas until 1947, when they moved to a farm in Dickinson County. In 1953, they moved to a farm in Lincoln Township, and in 1970 they moved to their farm south of Rolfe. Harold died on February 24, 1998, and Peg had continued to make her home on the farm.

Peg was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She also belonged to the 50-50 Club. Peg enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking and was a sports fan. She has always been active in the lives of her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children: Jay (Nancy) Frerk of Mallard, Dave (Kay) Frerk of Curlew, Jane (John) Schott of Pocahontas, Joe (Kathy) Frerk of Pocahontas, Dan (Diane) Frerk of Gilmore City and Jim (Cathy) Frerk of Rolfe; twenty grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Jack (Darlene) McCartan of Rolfe and Mark (Katie) McCartan of Bloomington, Minn.; sisters Mary Mendenhall of Kearney, Neb. and Catherine Nix of Denver, Colo.

Peg was preceded in death by her husband Harold and brother George McCartan.
