From the Iowa Independent Bankers Association

Banker Robert D. Dixon completed his career as a community banker on November 14, 2005. He was instrumental in the formation of the Iowa Independent Bankers in the early 1970’s and has served as Director Emeritus of IIB since that time. Two additional family generations have maintained his dedication and commitment to community banking through his son, Robert J. Dixon and his granddaughter, Heidi (Dixon) Nissen.

In honor of his work and dedication, the Board of Directors of the Iowa Independent Bankers has voted to change the name of the association’s Founders Award to the Robert D. Dixon Award. This award, presented annually at the association’s convention recognizes community bankers for their participation and devotion to community banking. IIB President Keith Lazar, President of Washington State Bank, said, “We are all saddened by the passing of one of Iowa’s most dedicated community bankers and the driving force behind the establishment of IIB. It is only fitting and proper that his legacy be honored long into the future.”

“In December of 1971, Robert D. Dixon, then serving as Iowa director of the Independent Bankers Association of America, called together a group of concerned Iowa bankers for the purpose of organizing a state independent bankers’ association. The impetus for a state-level organization was a report by the Bank Holding Companies Study Committee of the Iowa legislature which held hearings in 1971 during the interim between the first and second sessions of the Sixty-fourth General Assembly. That report contained a number of legislative recommendations relating to banking structure that were contrary to the philosophy and interests of independent bankers.”
